A Letter to Managers

Dear Managers,

You have done a lot in life and your experience has made you what you are today. Those years of hard work you did have all paid off and now you have been made a manager. There is no doubting that you truly deserved this position. In this position there are a lot of responsibilities that have got assigned to you along with the targets for you and your teams. You would certainly be on your way achieving it but........

Sir, It is important for you to understand that without your team you can never achieve your goal. In fact, you are a manager only because the team existed. Please value the team as much as you value your goals. We understand you might have faced a lot of bad in your life when you were a team member, but sir, do you think avenging it by a similar behavior with the team is correct? It would seem correct if you do not do what your manager did with you because that would show that you learnt. It is ofcourse your choice as to how you would behave, but remember, it will be the team member's choice then on how he behaves back.

A team member can fall sick, a team member can meet with an accident, a team members close one can get hospitalized. These are not some excuses for leaves sir, these could be genuine. You have been assigned as the manager inorder to look and understand who is genuine and who isn't. Just because someone lied to you does not mean every team member will lie to you. Also, Leaves are a real petty issue, please do not make a fuss out of them even after the team member is doing all his work diligently. It's a moral right of an employee to take rights, but if you do not approve them when needed, it is as good as food tied to a dog's tail... It is present, but the dog cannot eat it.

Everyone in the team has a self respect and self esteem. Please try not to hurt these. You will get respect on your face because of the manager tag but you will never be respected from the heart if you hurt people. Sir, consider the team as your family. Replace your team members with your son/daughter and think would they be happy if their manager was behaving the way you did. Behave the way you would a manager to behave with your family members and you will notice the difference from the team members as well.

Last but not the least, sir, Stop judging the team by the amount of hours one works for. If a member sits overtime for the allocated work, does not mean he is more dedicated, it means he was not capable of doing it in the timeline. A lot of your team members would be from various cities outside your office location and a lot would be from within the city. An outstation guy works overtime not because he cares extra for the company, it is because he doesn't have thing to do outside... No family, no friends. Please stop comparing it with people who live within the city who have things to do apart from office.

Sir. A change in behavior can do wonders for you and the team. Try it once and you will be surprised to see what happens.

Sincerely yours,

A dedicated team member
who respects you.
